Pickhan Stuffing Boxes

A “stuffing box“ consists of the stuffing box (the actual gasket) and a gland (a sleeve similar to a flange), with which the stuffing box is firmly pressed together in place with screws  and / or springs.  

By an axial pre-stressing the stuffing box is radially pressed onto the shaft. Thus the sealing gap is adjusted to a minimum according to the operating conditions. Stuffing boxes are used as an efficient sealing solution in the pump- and apparatus engineering and used as spindle sealing in control- and regulating valves and also serve as sealing means for shaft- and rod ducts through housings. By being impregnated with special compounds the stuffing box is prepared for its relevant use e.g. lubricants for pump packings, binding-, filling and dry lubricants for valve packings or PTFE for piston pump packings.  
For sealing stuffing boxes at highest temperatures and pressures, where braided packings cannot be used anymore, it is recommended to use packing rings and sleeves made from expanded graphite,  Hecker® Grafotherm®.
